HAL Group Inc. was retained by EDCO Constructors QEW/CR Joint Venture, on behalf of the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO), to conduct a limited bridge condition survey of the existing Credit River bridge (Site No. 24X-0203/B1). The purpose of this survey was to assess the structural integrity of the bridge and identify areas requiring remedial action to ensure its continued functionality and safety.
DELAMINATION SURVEY & REHABILITATION INSIGHTS
As part of this project, HAL Group Inc. carried out a comprehensive delamination survey on critical structural elements, including the spandrels, arches, and piers. This assessment was conducted following the removal of the existing superstructure to detect areas of concrete deterioration, such as delamination and other forms of distress, that required rehabilitation or repair. The findings of this survey supported the planning and execution of necessary restoration efforts to maintain the bridge’s structural performance.
BACKGROUND
Site No. 24X-0203/B1 was originally constructed in 1933 and underwent modifications in 1960. The structure consisted of a seven-span reinforced cast-in-place concrete slab supported by spandrel arches, with an asphalt-wearing surface that accommodated six (6) traffic lanes along the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW). Given the bridge’s vital role in supporting regional transportation, the detailed condition assessment provided valuable information for future rehabilitation and maintenance work.
